This tour takes us beneath the surface of the Earth into Lofthellir, a strange, eerie yet beautiful cave. Lofthellir is a lava cave that boasts incredible natural ice sculptures as well as colourful lava formations.
The journey to the cave is an adventure in itself. We drive along a rugged track that takes in the sights of Hverfell volcano, Lúdentarborgir a row of huge volcanic craters before passing the base of Mount Hvanfell. We go through an old forest before setting out on a short hike over lava fields until we reach Lofthellir.
You go then down into the cave system and find beautiful ice structures, including slides and "Church with alter". The colors inside the cave are stunning – vibrant and surreal at the same time.
You then descend a ladder into the cave system, which consists of several different chambers connected by ramps of ice (don´t worry – ropes are in place to assist you!). The temperature is around zero degrees, so make sure you are wrapped up warm. The highlight of the cave is undoubtedly the “Church with altar” sculpture.
We will spend at least one hour is spent inside the cave, giving you plenty of time to take photographs and absorb the magical serene atmosphere.
